How Time Flies

It seems like some things are so far in the past, while others just happened a few days ago. Here’s are a few comparisons to show how tricky time can be, even in the world of pop culture.

Clocks

Will Smith

After becoming a successful rapper while still a teenager in the ’80s, Will Smith turned to acting in 1990 with the title role on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. His character moved in with his older aunt and uncle, played by James Avery, who was 44 at the time. Smith is now 48, or four years older than “Uncle Phil” was at the beginning of The Fresh Prince. (Some people think Smith is even starting to resemble Avery.)

The Brady Bunch

The Brady Bunch Movie was released in early 1995. The premise of the film: the oh-so-’70s Bradys exist in the modern world, but dress and act like it’s still the very, very bygone 1970s. Well, 22 years have passed since the release of the first Brady Bunch Movie. At the time of its release, The Brady Bunch had only been off the air for 21 years.

John Travolta

One of the biggest pop culture stories of 1994 was the comeback of John Travolta. A massive star in the late ’70s and early ’80s for hits like Grease, Saturday Night Fever, and Urban Cowboy, he largely faded into obscurity in the 1980s. Quentin Tarantino gave him the role of heroin-addicted hitman Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, which earned Travolta an Oscar nomination. Pulp Fiction was released 14 years after Urban Cowboy, and Pulp Fiction is now 23 years old.

George W. Bush

This one is more “history” than “pop culture,” but it’s still notable. When George W. Bush took office in January 2001, his father George H.W. Bush had been out of office for eight years, losing his 1992 re-election bid to Bill Clinton. It’s now been more than eight years since George W. Bush left the White House.

Marge Simpson

It’s a cartoon, so nobody ages, but several times on The Simpsons, it’s been stated that Marge Simpson is 36 years old and her kids, Bart and Lisa are 10 and eight, respectively. The Simpsons debuted in 1989, and if Bart and Lisa were aging in real time, they’d now be 38 and 36, or more than old enough to have Barts and Lisas of their own.
